If we were to rank web hosting purely on price per gigabyte of storage, 1&1's Home package would be good value. Plus, you get a domain name with the package and unlimited bandwidth, which means that if your website suddenly takes off, you won’t get stuck with extra charges. For your money you also get support for one MySQL and one Microsoft SQL database and for PHP and Perl scripting languages. This gives more experienced web designers the ability to create more complex database-driven sites, or simply to do something like host an online shop.

Another handy feature is the inclusion of fifty subdomains. Small businesses in particular will need these if they want to use services like Microsoft Exchange or Remote Web Access or even some online shops; not options you want to close off by choosing the wrong package.

Of course, features aren’t everything – quality of service counts too. 1&1 is one of the few hosting companies to operate a dedicated 24/7 helpline. In our tests it was always answered within just a few minutes, even in the dead of night, and staff knew what they were talking about.

The online control panel is clean and well designed, making it easy to find what you’re looking for. Setting up FTP access and getting our test site online took only minutes. As well as a basic hosting service, the Home package offers some nice extras such as an RSS-feed creator and a form-builder for creating your own surveys from scratch. We particularly liked the SMS app, which allows you to send text messages your friends’ phones from the web. Sadly, it can’t be integrated into your site and there’s no client app.

The new Online Office apps (Writer, Sheet and Show) are a nice bonus - they're powered by Zoho. There's also online webmail and 2GB of online storage per user. Marketing tools are more or less limited to Google Sitemap and a newsletter tool, unless you want to pay for banner advertising.

1&1’s Home hosting package is well put together and easy to use, striking a nice balance between offering lots of features and making the service accessible to everyone. It isn't the cheapest here, but if you want a UK-based provider with telephone support, it's a fine choice.

Hosting Reviews

We were very unsatisfied with the service made by 1and1.co.uk now am really happy to say our host is unlimitedgb.com

By kavinjans123 on 23 Nov 2010

I have to agree with kavinjans123, 1and1 are a terrible company especially if you have a complaint, they only accept complaints via email that they never actually answer the question. After 5 years of using them I have moved away but we are still in dispute but don't get anywhere, they honestly suck! the review above just does not give a true representation of them I am afraid.

By martin0001 on 24 May 2011

The service is awful, they have no customer service number or email, only a complaints department. They have taken money from me which they shouldn't have and won't give it back - there are plenty of other providers out there, take my advice and stay clear of 1 and 1

What a load of tripe

I have been with 1 and 1 for over 10 years and I have never heard such a load of rubbish written in an 'honest' review about a company. Look at any of the customer review sites and you will see what 1 and 1's customers think about their service.

1. Yes, they are not the cheapest offer around - once they have snared customers with the 6 months "free" offer, prices rise steeply.

2. Service, perhaps you can get customer service 24/7, if you are prepared to pay for their premium rate number. The rest of us have to wait two days to a response to our emails.

3. UK based? Really?? 1 and 1's servers are definitely NOT in the UK. They are based in Germany. There are plenty of hosting providers who's servers are based in the UK, 1 and 1 is not one of them.

4. Features, shop around. You'll find much cheaper hosting providing all the features (and a lot more) 1 and 1 offer for much less money. They are also on reliable, fast and decent servers. Being able to host one mySQL database for £6 a month is not good value. It is appalling.

5. Want to leave? Beware. 1 and 1 will deliberately keep your domain name in abeyance for the maximum period while cancelling your contract immediately to cause the maximum disruption to your business and causing knock on effects to your google rankings and customer loyalty. Oh, and by the way, if you leave after they have just taken 6 months' payment from you, don't expect a refund - they keep the lot. and at £12.99 /month per account, that's a lot.

Take their EX-customers' advice and steer clear.

Reviewer obviously hasn't dealt with them

Firstly, they are not UK based.

At all

OK yes they have a trading company but all servers etc are in Germany. They have NO backup, if their German datacentre has a problem then all of your DNS is to pot. I have checked this directly with them when asking about backups and or tertiary DNS. I was told that this wasn't an option.

They have no support for the simplest things, txt or SPF in DNS. If your domain happens to be hosted by them then don't try to use an anti spam company or any online Microsoft services as you cannot because their DNS doesn't support it. In fact their DNS doesn't support most things, oh and nor does support. Last chap I spoke to didn't know what DNS was....

Their UK support was in India but has now moved - to the Phillipines where they are less polite and less knowledgable and certainly less helpful. If you need second level support, move your domain to another company and then call them. Oh hang on moving away from 1and1 takes a week because they purposely make life hell on the way out. 72 hours to adjust the IPS tag, a few seconds on the way in...... Just been left on hold hoping that I would go away, when the operator realised I was going to wait she laughed and disconnected me

By this time tomorrow I'm hoping I will never ever ever have to deal with this company again

joy !

1&1 Internet - Avoid at all costs

We have been with 1&1 Internet for approx 6 years (not because they are good - in fact they are dreadfull). The problem is that once you set everything up (we have 35 websites) it is difficult to move. Over this period, we have had numerous issues and have even reported them to Trading Standards and threatened legal proceeding on a few occasions. The most recent issue resolves around our trying to cancel a domain. Prior to its renewal, I personally phoned 1&1 (who charge 6p per minute + operator costs) and explained that we would be cancelling the domain. We cancelled it online and were then billed for the next 2years. we disputed this and 1&1 staff lied to us on numerous occasions, never looked into the case and even said that they could not deal with it because the issue (£7.18p) had been passed to debt collectors. I called the debt collectors and they knew nothing about this. Our payments to 1&1 were via Paypal so we simply appealed stating that !&1 had no right to take money because we had expressly forbade them from doing so for that particular domain. Paypal refunded our payment, but we then went through the same scenario numerous times and they even tried toi take money from our card (which we blocked) even though they had eventually conceded our case and issued a credit note for the full amount. If you are looking for a decent Hosting company - for the love of God - look elsewhere (we are).

Avoid 1&1

I set up a website with this company and they ran into trouble collecting fees, so I paid direct from my online bank account. Next thing I knew they were chasing me for pay payment, so I sent them a copy of my statement. Then they placed the matter in the hands of debt collector who seemed to know that 1&1 were clueless.
Eventually they accepted I had paid.
6 months later my next payment was due and guess what same again.

If only it was just me but no. A friend said they had the same problem and if they had known I was dealing with 1&1 she would have warned me off.

So save yourself trouble and avoid.

Avoid 1 and 1 - dreadful.

If you value your web presence move to a different provider. It really is that simple. Issues over billing (in my opinion they are a bunch of crooks, money first, maybe some support later) and there are other providers who offer far more superior products for less money. I've been with them for four years and only now finally able to cancel all my packages, moving to a different provider, saving 50% and getting more features... they make it very hard for you to transfer so you need to forward plan and cancel a good month or two before you cancellation date... otherwise tehy'll take your money. I've just had them take money for a contract that they should not have but I'm so unhappy with this company that I'm willing to let it go just to leave them. Avoid, money better spent elsewhere without the headache.

A fine choice indeed.... Yeah right!

Karl Wright you are, to put it politely somewhat misguided....1@1 Internet is a pathetic bunch of thieving criminal Scumbags and you know it. They have brought nothing but misery to thousands of customers with their ghastly criminal activities. Why not Just keep stealing peoples money instead of providing a good basic service, seems to be an easier way to make money for them...Why this shower of s**t haven't been shut down yet or taken through the Courts is a complete mystery. You obviously have never used their crap service or you are in some way connected to them....Folks avoid this company if you want to keep your sanity and the debt collection letters away from your house.... They will ruin your credit rating for £10.00... bloody W***ers

Peace out

Don't event think about using this company. They will ruin your credit report! I never used them and they are making me to pay £50! I cannot believe
that this company has not been prosecuted yet! They are making some silly online contracts which make no sense.
