Our Rating
This educational title is for seven- to 11-year-olds and is designed for whole-class teaching via a whiteboard.
However, it is also available for home use on the PC. It is linked to the Key Stage 2 geography curriculum, but the first four of its six sections cover topics that are essentially geological.
The program starts by asking: "What are mountains?" It makes the distinction between mountains and hills, and points out they are not normally found singly but in ranges. The next part explains how they are formed, and introduces the idea of moving plates, the formation of the Himalayas as a result of India moving into Asia, and the occurrence of earthquakes. Volcanoes are the next topic, followed by Environment, which looks at the action of weathering to form soils. The final two sections are Climate, which explains the role of mountains in determining rainfall, and Man and Mountains, which looks at activities of economic importance in mountainous areas.
This software uses well-drawn diagrams and animations. The presentation is narrated throughout and there are questions at the end of each section to check comprehension. Teachers will find the included worksheets useful.
