BIRCHFIELD Lesson Kits for Chemistry: The Earth's Structure review
This title, designed for the Key Stage 4 (age 14-16) curriculum, has five sections: the atmosphere, tectonic plates, and igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Each has the same structure and includes information screens interspersed with activities such as sentence completion, true and false exercises, and a hangman game to test students' knowledge.
The program also includes a jigsaw activity, a pairs game and a Mega Quiz that lets users create a movie as a reward. One drawback is that if you don't get full marks there's no feedback providing the right answers; instead, you need to repeat the presentation to find your errors.
The photos and animations are all high quality, but there isn't a great deal of material. Three sound settings let you choose between background music plus narration of the text, narration only and no audio. A password-protected teachers' zone explains the objectives of each section, provides answers to the questions students face and shows how the content is mapped to the syllabuses of various GCSE exam boards.
This title is just one of the 11 on Birchfield's Lesson Kits for Chemistry DVD. Other lessons include The Work of Ice on the Geography DVD and The Earth and Beyond, which is included in the Physics set.
