A great-value card, but you may have trouble using it with some devices

The PNY StorEDGE 128GB is an SDXC card that’s intended to be used with MacBook Air and Pros, as it sits flush with the casing of those laptops. However, it will work with other laptops that don’t require you to insert the StorEDGE completely into an SD card reader. You may also have trouble using it with devices such as digital cameras due to its MacBook-friendly shape. We had no trouble using it with our test laptop and Kingston MobileLite G3 card reader, but it’s best to check that it’ll work with your computer before you buy it.

PNY StorEDGE 128GB

The card performed fairly well in our storage benchmarks, reading large files at 84.2MB/s and writing large files at 50.8MB/s. It had a harder time writing small files, though, doing so at a rate of 4.9MB/s. The small file test is more challenging, so this isn’t much of a surprise. The StorEDGE 128GB did, however, read small files at a good 33.9MB/s.

These speeds compare well to the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I Card 32GB, which wrote large files at a faster 61.5MB/s and read them at a slightly slower 81.8MB/s. It also wrote small files at a slightly faster 5.4MB/s but read them at a slower 29MB/s.

Given that the StorEDGE 128GB costs only 60p per gigabyte, it’s better-value compared to relatively more expensive lower-capacity SD cards, and is a great choice if you want to carry around a large media library for use with you laptop.
