Canon Pixma iX4000 review

Our Rating 3 stars out of 5

Canon has bucked the silver and black trend and opted instead for a more basic grey and beige look for the iX4000. Although it does have the odd curve here and there, it's a fairly chunky, boxy looking model.

It takes paper in at the back and spits it out at the front, so you'll need to unfurl various appendages to get it ready for action.

The iX4000 only stretches to the standard four-colour cyan, magenta, yellow and black, but each is housed in a separate tank so can be replaced as and when they expire. The black cartridge is bigger, so if you need to do text as well as images, it should last longer.

There's no display, so information about what the printer is up to is limited to two LEDs, and there are only two buttons to play with. While you can't see what the ink levels are at a glance, if you open the top of the unit, you'll see a red light by each tank - if it's flashing, it means the ink will soon run out.

The Pixma iX4000 is certainly a speedy unit, chewing through an A3 image in four minutes 19 seconds and spitting out a full-colour A4 document in two minutes 18 seconds. Quality was reasonable, although skin tones had a slight yellow cast. When viewed close up, we could detect patterns where smooth transitions should exist, and these were more noticeable in shadows and dark areas. It also flew through text, with the first page dropping after 13 seconds and all five after 50 seconds. To help with colour management, there's a set of ICC profiles for Canon media.

The Canon Pixma iX4000 is certainly quick, but it lacks the quality and attention to detail seen on other machines in this Labs.
