Canon BJC-250 review
Verdict:
Acceptable quality at a rock-bottom price - ideal if you can't afford a CMYK inkjet.

Our Rating
The BJC-250 is unusual by not offering colour and black ink simultaneously.
However, it includes a free black cartridge as well as one for colour. But even if a black cartridge is included, constantly swapping print heads in a CMY printer is a pain. Consequently, the Canon loses marks for ease of use.
The Canon has a substantial feel to it, with good straight paper paths and accessible print heads. Like the HP670C it sports external power supplies - unnecessary, as it has plenty of room in the case. It has minimal controls, and its trays are easy to load but not very capacious.
It's absolutely essential that an inkjet produces black text of a high standard. Decent text quality is less interesting than photo-realistic colour, but you'll have to rely on it far more often.
Canon's printer holds the middle ground on quality, with similar text quality at 300dpi (the most sensible resolution to print on plain paper), but moving to the maximum resolution, the quality of the BJC-250 remains little more than adequate.
The Canon BJC-250 gains a place in our Top 50 for being unbeaten at the price, though largely because the superior Epson Stylus 200 has been recently discontinued (Epson couldn't get us its replacement, the Stylus 300, in time to test). Nevertheless, the Canon is good value, especially as it includes a black cartridge and other goodies.
