Xerox DocuPrint M760 review
Better known for its photocopiers, Xerox has been making inkjets for just over a year now.
The M760 is aimed at networked office use, and undercuts its main rival, HP's DeskJet 980Cxi, by almost £60.
Design
The M760 stumbled immediately in our tests. Windows 98 SE failed to recognise it via the USB connection, and refused to finish the installation. This meant we had to conduct all the tests using a parallel connection. Like the Sharp, it's very noisy; unlike the Sharp, Xerox provides a well-illustrated booklet. On installation, the M760 prompts you to choose between eXpress and Normal settings, printing out a sample in both and making your preferred choice the default.
Print quality
As the M760 and Sharp AJ-1800 share the same print head and cartridges, we expected near-identical results in our tests. And so it proved. Poor text quality on plain paper, unimpressive photos, but a reasonable report printout and even better newsletter. Impressively, there isn't much loss of quality when using the eXpress setting.
Speed
The Xerox performed similarly to the Sharp at its standard setting, but switching to eXpress reaped immediate benefits. The five-page text-only test took just a minute, while the report emerged after a reasonable 49 seconds. Only the 980Cxi can rival those speeds, although the M760 was less impressive at higher quality settings.
Overall
The networking option makes the Xerox a viable, cheaper alternative to the 980Cxi for office setups, but text quality is very disappointing.
