TALLYGENICOM T9316 review

Verdict:

Review Date: 23 Jul 2004

Price when reviewed: inc VAT

Our Rating 2 stars out of 5

Three of the nine printers on test this month use the same printing mechanism; two of these, the Konica Minolta and the TallyGenicom, go further, sharing the same housing and software.

The result is that these two printers are largely indistinguishable in terms of speed, image quality and ergonomics. At £55 more than the Konica Minolta, the TallyGenicom looks rather unappealing.

The installation instructions are ambiguous, which resulted in our installing two identical drivers for the printer. Once we worked out which one was working, we tried to delete the other, but it remains to this day on our test PC's Printers and Faxes folder with the word 'Deleting' beside it.

The T9316 didn't suffer the same broken output tray extender as the PagePro 1300W, but it did drop the odd sheet from the output tray back into the input tray. This means you'll either have to fashion some kind of extra paper-holding structure (a piece of thick card would do it) or stand over it during print jobs.

Graphics print speeds largely matched those of the Konica Minolta at up to 13.1ppm, but text prints were a little slower at 14.4ppm. Both printers were just as slow at producing their first print, taking 21 seconds, but both produced impressive image quality. Greyscale accuracy was particularly high, producing natural-looking photos, although visible banding limited its success to an extent. This was particularly noticeable at the top image resolution, at which prints were also too dark, but the default 1,200x600dpi didn't lack detail.

If the T9316's price falls to match that of the Konica Minolta there will be nothing to separate them. Still, the Samsung ML-1710's even lower price and better paper handling make it our choice for those on a tight budget.
