Altair's Chronicles appeared on the Nintendo DS early last year, and now GameLoft has squeezed it into the iPhone's single (but higher resolution) screen.
Most of the game is taken up with traditional platform and fighting action, so our first question was how well the controls would transfer to the touchscreen.
On the left-hand side of the display is a virtual analogue stick that moves Altair. The further your thumb moves from its centre point, the faster Altair moves, and you'll need to master this in order to traverse narrow gangways between rooftops and other obstacles. It's fiddly at first, but it doesn't take long to get to grips with.
Action buttons on the right-hand side of the screen allow you to strike enemies with your sword, alternating between two actions to build special combinations. Other actions appear according to the situation, initiating special actions such as pick pocketing, where you have to drag the desired item towards the opening without touching any others. These mini-games help to break up the gameplay, and working against the clock adds excitement. Should a call come in, the game pauses so you can pick up where you left off.
Production values are good, from the excellent graphics right through to voice acting and it moves fluidly toow. Add to this a storyline that pins everything together and Assassin's Creed becomes a more involving experience than many iPhone games.
