For many, a true role-playing adventure lets you go anywhere you like in its virtual game world, developing your character the way you want to and carrying out the quests you choose, rather than being at the mercy of a linear storyline.

One of the reasons why online games such as EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot are so popular is because players can go wherever they wish, offering them a truly individual experience. It's a sense of freedom seldom captured by single-player games. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is one of the rare exceptions.

The world of Morrowind may seem huge and intimidating, but for the bold role-playing enthusiast it's full of richness, both in graphics and gameplay. You play a prisoner who's been set free on a mysterious island. Although the game has a central plot, there's no need to stick to it rigidly. You're welcome to have as much fun as you like - looting and pillaging the local countryside, for example.

You can choose the class, skills and spells your character uses at the start of the game, but ultimately it's the way you play during the game that shapes the way your character develops. If you use a sword and shield in combat you'll find your ability in those areas increases faster than other skills. If you run frantically about you'll find your agility builds up more quickly. Morrowind is aimed less at the casual role-player and more at the die-hard fan who's well practiced at putting in the time needed to get the most out of an adventure. It suffers a little from having no multiplayer option, but the single-player game is so intoxicating, you'll get your money's worth a dozen times over.
