Our Rating
If there is one genre of games that is over-populated, it's the first-person shooter. Now comes Kreed, a futuristic shooter developed in Russia by Burut Creative Team and released in the UK by Acclaim, to add to the glut.
To get you in the mood for monster slaying there is a convoluted sci-fi plot involving inter-species power struggles and a mysterious anomaly. To be honest, though, it's all just bumf with virtually no bearing on the gameplay. In essence, you shoot the bad guys, whom you'll recognise from their fervent efforts to kill you.
Unfortunately those bad guys just aren't frightening enough, because of their predictable placement, mechanical AI and uninspired animation. There are titbits of information pertaining to the underlying story scattered around the levels, but they have no direct influence on how events unfold.
Despite a reasonable game engine the uninspired level design doesn't add to the experience and, while graphically competent, it's a country mile from the cutting edge. There are some interesting touches - the flame thrower is great - but, in general, you just kill baddies and progress. There is no tension, no drama and no heart-stopping action to keep you focused. It's as though the developers completely forgot they were creating a game and not just writing code.
With so many spectacular titles around there isn't room for mediocrity. In a market where you must to excel to succeed, Kreed simply fails.
