Our Rating
In a dark era of disappointment, at a multiplex not so far away, the Star Wars franchise that we loved so dearly as children was forever changed.
During this dark time, many substandard games were released to support the franchise's new direction. The exception to this rule was the outstanding Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), which won many plaudits. By setting itself thousands of years before the movies, it avoided becoming a mere footnote and could establish its own legends.
KOTOR 2 follows the template of the first game with a few tweaks here and there. If you haven't played the first game, you may as well buy that for less. If you're familiar with the original then you'll know exactly what to expect, as the changes are insignificant. However, the voice acting and presentation maintain the incredible standards set in the original.
The plot involves a little amnesia, some great companions and more disturbances in the force than you can shake an illuminated sword at. The main themes revolve around exploration and simple puzzles, all of which are regularly interrupted by bouts of combat. The battles are the main draw, blending turn-based and real-time combat with an amazing range of attacks and abilities.
If you have an affection for all things Jedi and 25-plus hours to spare, this game does no wrong. It is limited only by its similarity to the original.
