Logitech’s X-230 is one of our favourite set of speakers and for good reason - its sound quality is astonishing for the price. The compact subwoofer produced loud, deep bass that put many more expensive 2.1 sets to shame and the satellites displayed a warmth, richness and clarity that flattered every kind of music with which we tested them.

Blues, jazz and classical pieces benefit particularly well from the precise sound. Although other 2.1 sets can produce a more focussed bass as well as a crisper and even more detailed midrange these improvements are only really noticeable in certain types of music, such as pop and rock tracks, and these speakers cost more than three times as much as the X-230.

The bass control is places on the back of the subwoofer and is a little tricky to reach. However, as this needs infrequent adjustments, it's not a massive problem. Thankfully, the headphone socket and volume and power controls are more conveniently located on the right satellite, which we think is neater than the separate wired remotes used by some other speaker sets. The right satellite is also the hub for subwoofer, left satellite and computer cabling connections, all of which are captive; using the subwoofer as the hub would cut down on desktop clutter. The lengthy 1.8m cabling between the satellites gives a lot of flexibility in where you can place them around your computer.

The messy cabling is worth putting up with for such a great sounding set of speakers. Although the X-230 doesn’t have any extra features, such as wired remote or iPod docks, or a fancy appearance this is more than forgivable at this low price. The X-230 has been around for years and its longevity is a testament to its quality and value - you have to spend a lot more to get better sounding audio making the X-230 great value and the computer speakers which others are judged by. It gets a Best Buy award.
