We’ve seen a lot of great cheap and mid-priced iPod docks lately, with astonishing audio quality from budget kit like the Altec Lansing Octiv 102. However, we haven’t seen many with the ability to sync our MP3 players to our PC when docked, so we were pleased to see the DS3020’s mini-USB port. By connecting the dock to your PC, you’ll be able to use it to charge your iPod, play music from it and transfer files from iTunes.

The Fidelio can also be powered by four AA batteries, making it ideal for festivals and picnics. You’ll get around eight hours’ battery life and – because they’re just standard batteries – you can always carry a spare set with you if required. Audio quality from the stereo speakers is clear, balanced and remains distortion-free at high volumes. The speakers’ dynamic bass boost can’t compensate for the lack of a sub, but the sound isn’t harsh or tinny.

The free Fidelio app for iPhone and iPod Touch users makes it easy to tune in to internet radio, set alarms and sleep timers, and control whether you want the iPod to be charged by the dock or not – handy when you’re running on batteries. The only thing missing is a remote control.

At £50, with a syncing USB connection, true portability and respectable audio quality, the Fidelio DS3020 is a perfect addition to the desk in any bedroom, study or packed suitcase. It’s our Best Buy if you’re looking for a mid-priced iPod dock.
