Nvidia's latest card has arrived six months too late, and looks expensive compared to equivalent ATI models.

Finally, the GTX 470 has PhysX built-in. For games that support it, such as the excellent Batman: Arkham Asylum (What’s New, Shopper 262), objects move in a more realistic way and appear to have weight to them. It’s fairly impressive when implemented properly.

The real measure of a graphics card is its performance, and the GTX 470 is quick. In our Call of Duty 4 test it managed an impressive 81.9fps even at 1,920×1,080 with 4x anti-aliasing. In our more demanding Crysis test it scored an impressive 45.3fps at the same settings; this compares favourably to the Radeon HD 5850, which managed 42.4fps here.

The big problem with the GTX 470 is price, as the HD 5850 costs around £100 less, but isn’t significantly slower at present. As more DirectX 11 titles are released, we may find that this card’s capabilities grow, but for the time being the HD 5850 is a far better deal for serious gamers. The only people who should consider buying it are 3D fanatics or those needing a very powerful CUDA-compatible card for a specific application
