Verbatim SSD 240GB review

A decent drive that’s marred by its comparatively high price

240GB sata solid state disk

Verbatim isn’t known for its SSDs, so it’s no surprise that the firm doesn’t have a whole range of drives from which you can choose your favourite. Its consumer offering doesn’t even have a name. The simply titled Verbatim SSD provides 240GB of space which equates to 222GB when formatted. That’s more than enough for a Windows installation and a host of oft-used applications.

Perhaps predictably, it’s the same old story on the inside and out. The Verbatim drive is powered by the SandForce SF-2281 controller and, like many of this month’s other contenders, a 2.5in to 3.5in adapter bracket and a data backup and migration utility is included in the box, which means it’s ready to use as soon as you get it home. It also comes with a three-year warranty, as is typical with a lot of solid-state disks.

Verbatim SSD 240GB

The SF-2281 has delivered mixed results, but it performed well here. The Verbatim’s large-file write test score of 308MB/s is entirely respectable, and its large-file read test result of 384MB/s is even better, beating the Ultimate-award-winning Corsair Performance Series Pro.

The Verbatim SSD was decent when handling small files, too. Its write speed of 83MB/s is acceptable, and its small-file read test score of 61MB/s is also fast compared to other drives we’ve recently tested.

Our main qualm concerns its price. It’s £229 for this 240GB model, making it 95p per gigabyte and a little expensive. If you’re going to spend that much, you may as well go for the Ultimate award-winning Corsair Performance Series Pro, which is even faster and no more expensive in terms of price per gigabyte.
