Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab S6 with introductory video

Out of the blue, Samsung has revealed the Galaxy Tab S6

UPDATE: Samsung has announced the Galaxy Tab S6 with a short introductory video featuring artist Coco Capitan. The video highlights the Tab S6’s new dual rear camera (with an ultra-wide-angle lens) and DeX multitasking mode support with compatible keyboards, as well as the fact that it supports the S Pen, a first for a Samsung tablet.

Now for the specs. The Tab S6 will have a 10.5in Super AMOLED display and will weigh in at 420g. It will have a dual rear camera (13-megapixel + 5-megapixel) with an ultra-wide-angle lens and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Keeping the lights on is a 7,040mAh battery. Then there’s the S Pen, which Coco describes in more depth in her video; it sits on the rear of the device in a small crevice.

On the internals front, the Tab S6 will use a 7nm octa-core processor (a Snapdragon 855), supported by either 6GB RAM and 128GB storage or 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. You’ll be able to stick a MicroSD card of up to 1TB in size in there too.

The Tab S6 will launch in select markets in “late August”, according to Samsung, and will be available in three colours: Mountain Grey, Cloud Blue, and Rose Blush.

Samsung is launching the Galaxy Tab 6 today at 3pm BST. Not exactly earth-shattering news, you might think, and you’d be right, but for the fact that we’re only a week away from this year’s Samsung Unpacked event in New York.

Just like everyone else, we were expecting to see both the Galaxy Tab S6 and the upcoming Galaxy Watch Active 2 launch in Brooklyn on 7 August alongside Samsung’s latest flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 10. One 20-second video announcement from Samsung later, however, and we’ve been proven categorically wrong.

The video – which reveals both the Galaxy Tab S6 and the Watch Active 2 – is typically enigmatic, although it does shed a bit of light on a few of the Tab S6’s hitherto-rumoured features. The S Pen makes several appearances: at one point, we see it lying flat on the rear of the Tab S6, lending weight to the rumour that the new tablet will have a groove on the left-hand side (below the camera) in which the S Pen will nestle.

Speaking of which: we catch a glimpse or two of the rear camera array, stretching vertically down from the top left-hand corner of the tablet. If the leaks are to be trusted, the Tab S6 will have two rear cameras, with as-of-yet unknown aperture sizes, resolutions and functions.

Otherwise, there isn’t masses to report. A volume rocker, power button and SIM card slot all flash past, but we see very little of the rumoured 10.5in Super AMOLED display. Samsung claims that the tablet “inspires creativity and elevates your productivity” – we can only take wild guesses at what that might mean.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to fill in the blanks; the Tab S6 launches today, 31 July at 3pm BST (10am ET, 7pm PT). In addition, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will launch on 5 August; we’ll have more information on that in a separate article once the smartwatch is unveiled.

We’ll update this page as soon as we know more about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, so check back soon.
