When reading, there are the usual zoom, bookmarking and annotation options, although the latter extends only to underlining rather than adding notes. A reading setup submenu lets you change the line spacing, text-to-speech and screen refresh settings – the PER5162 seemed less prone to ghosting than some other readers when using the default partial refresh, although page turns weren’t especially snappy. Its accelerometer automatically re-orientates the page to match the reader; at a push you could invert the reader to use it with your left hand, but the page numbering and title bars remain stubbornly at their original orientation.

Once you learn to live with this eReader’s unlovable looks and less than ideal menus, it turns out to have quite a few strengths. It supports one of the widest ranges of file formats we’ve seen, for example, and opened and displayed each of our test files perfectly. It costs significantly more than the Kobo eReader Touch, however; if you can live without audio playback and text to speech, Kobo’s reader is a much better choice.
