Everybody loves a freebie – especially one you can bark orders at.
If you head to the Currys PC World website and purchase the HP 11-v051na 11.6-inch Chromebook, you can also pick up a Google Nest Mini smart speaker (that retails separately for £49) completely free of charge.
The HP 11-v051na itself comes in at £179. You may be understandably hesitant about buying a laptop that costs less than £200, a price bracket that hard screams ‘high-quality, long-lasting tech’. But that’s the beauty of Chromebooks – they’re low on horsepower, but low on cost too.

These Google-operated devices have been rather maligned in recent years – after all, the word ‘affordable’ rarely has any prestige attached to it. But more and more people who don’t need bells and whistles with those their laptops are starting to realise that Chromebooks make for highly reliable workhorses (including this writer, who realised upon the sad death of his 10-year-old Macbook Pro that he didn’t have a spare £1,146 to spend on a replacement).
If your laptop activities don’t extend any further than browsing, streaming and word processing – or as Currys describes it, a ‘simple computing experience’ – they make for a very smart choice indeed. Who needs complicated these days, anyway? There’s plenty enough of that going around right now.

The Google Nest Mini, meanwhile, was awarded a four-star verdict by Expert Reviews’ Jonathan Bray. He described it as a ‘welcome upgrade’ to the previous generation model – and also pointed at that, while it can’t match rival Amazon’s smart speakers in terms of sound quality, the Nest Mini’s Google Assistant remains cleverer than its Amazon counterpart, Alexa. (Although if you do happen to be considering investing in an Echo Dot, they’re currently going for 40% less than usual in Amazon’s February sale.)
So if you happen to be in the market for a new laptop and are considering taking the Chromebook route, here’s our advice: make the HP 11-v051na the first one you consider.
