Discounted rail fares are EVEN CHEAPER with this Railcard deal

New customers can save up to £23 on a Railcard through Trainline

As vital as it is to many people across the country, train travel in the UK is expensive – and it’s certainly not getting any cheaper. So, if you’re a frequent traveller or commuter, the benefits of getting yourself a Railcard are obvious: it can cut one-third off the cost of your rail tickets.

Of course, you have to pay for your railcard (after all, nothing in life is free). But if you travel frequently enough, you’ll soon earn back your investment in savings. What’s more, you can currently save 33% on the cost of a digital railcard when you buy it through Trainline.

Simply use the code NEWTERM33 at the checkout, and you can get a one-year Railcard for just £20 (was £30), or a 3-year Railcard (where available) down from £70 to £47.

It’s important to get some of the fine print out of the way first. According to Trainline’s terms and conditions, you must be a new customer (meaning you haven’t bought a Railcard or a ticket through Trainline before) to be eligible for the discount. Your new Railcard will be stored on the Trainline app, although you can still use it with tickets bought elsewhere. If you’re eligible for the discount, read on for our breakdown of the different types of Railcard available.

The best Railcard for you will depend on how old you are and who you travel with. We’ve explained the key differences below:

16-17 Saver: Save 50% on most rail tickets if you’re aged 16-17. These can also be used for Season tickets and are eligible for a year (or until your 18th birthday, if you’re already 17).

16-25 Railcard: Save one-third on eligible rail fares. Available as a one-year card or a three-year card (if you’re under 24). If you buy a one-year Railcard when you’re 25, it will still be valid for a full year.

26-30 Railcard: Save one-third on eligible fares. Like the 16-25 Railcard, this will be valid for a full year provided you buy before your 31st birthday.

Senior Railcard: Adults aged 60 or above save one-third on rail tickets. Available as a one-year or three-year Railcard, and only available digitally.

Two Together and Family and Friends Railcards: Couples or those who travel in a pair can save one-third on rail fares for one year with the Two Together Railcard. For bigger groups of up to four adults and four children, the Family and Friends Railcard is available for one year or three years. This cuts one-third off adult fares and 60% off children’s fares (but at least one adult and one child must travel together).

Network Railcard: Designed for commuters, this is for those travelling in London and the South East. Up to four adults save one-third on rail fares, and up to four children save 60%.

If you’re eligible for any of the Railcards listed above, now is the perfect time to take advantage of this discount. What’s more, with a digital Railcard, you can start using it right away. Happy travels!
