3M demos 20-point multitouch monitor

3M might not be the first name that springs to mind when you think about monitors, but the company's latest multi-touch marvel could well change your mind.
Captured in action over on Tech On during the InfoComm 2010 conference, 3M's M2256PW is a 22in widescreen monitor that brings an impressive level of multi-touch to PCs.
Unlike many touch-screen devices, which can only track a small number of points, 3M's latest creation is capable of tracking a full twenty points of contact - enough to individually follow the tip of each finger on both of its user's hands. Although a display with the same model number was previewed earlier this year at CES, that version only managed to track ten points of contact - so it looks like 3M has given the display an upgrade over the last few months.
Although full details aren't yet available from the company, the display reportedly features a native resolution of 1,680x1,050 - which is disappointingly slightly short of a full-HD 1920x1080 - along with a distinctly average 6ms response time.
Despite the somewhat lacklustre specifications, it's clear that 3M has something special on its hands - and its likely target audience of industrial and medical customers likely won't care about response times.
A UK launch date for the 3M M2256PW hasn't yet been announced, but the device is expected to launch in the US at $1,500 (around £1,017) - further cementing the device as one for the professional market only.
