HP OfficeJet 150 – first portable MFP launched

Up to 500 prints from a single battery charge

We’ve seen mobile scanners and we’ve seen mobile printers before, but HP has now released the first mobile all-in-one MFP, the inkjet OfficeJet 150 Mobile All-in-one.

The new device was described, jokingly, as being able to fit in a ‘handbag’. That may be a generous description, as the MFP is really more suitable for a large laptop bag or dedicated briefcase, but it’s still impressive to see a device that can print and scan without needing a separate power source.

While it’s not the kind of product you’d carry everywhere with your laptop, it’s size is likely to be attractive to business that need instant access to a printer and scanner.

“Why we’re doing this,” said John Solomon, senior vice president of imaging and printing at HP, “is for customers with their client who want to print where and when they are.”

HP also said that the device is great for businesses that need to email documents immediately, such as for a freshly-signed contract.

Although the OfficeJet 150 has USB and Bluetooth for printing from a PC or mobile phone (Windows Phone is supported and Blackberry users must pay for a third-party service), there’s a lot you can do without touching a computer.

With memory card slots and a touchscreen display, you can print and copy files. However, scanning does require a PC, as the OfficeJet doesn’t support scan to email.

Print speeds, using the ISO test methodology, aren’t too quick, with colour pages coming out at up to 3.5ppm and 5ppm black and white. Copy speeds are up to 2ppm for colour and 4ppm for black and white. Scan speeds are quoted us up to 1.7ppm black and white at 200dpi, and up to 0.9ppm colour at 200dpi.

Print costs should be fairly reasonable with black cartridges rated for 500 pages and colour cartridges rated for 560 pages. However, the cost of the OfficeJet 150 isn’t quite so cheap with a retail price of around €399 (around £329). It will go on sale in the middle of June.
