Days Gone deals: Where to buy, plus everything you need to know

SIE Bend's zombie survival game, Days Gone, is now available for purchase

Days Gone is finally on store shelves, meaning you can finally play it! Nearly three years after its initial announcement in 2016, players can now jump into the post-apocalyptic, zombie filled landscape of New Oregon, alongside protagonist Deacon St John and his trusty bike. If you’re interested in picking up Days Gone and experiencing it for yourself, we’re here to let you know how. All you have to do is read on.

Days Gone: How much does it cost?

Like most games, Days Gone has become cheaper to buy since release. If you head over to Amazon, you can purchase the limited edition version of the game for £39.99. Paying for the limited edition will provide you with an exclusive steelbook cover, which is always a plus.

If you just want the game without the metal case, however, you can also purchase Days Gone without the special cover. In that case, Amazon has you covered for £39.99.

There is one more version of the game you can buy and it’s a big one. For £84, you can purchase the Days Gone Special Edition. This edition contains a physical and digital art book, a physical and digital soundtrack of the game and the steelbook cover from the limited edition.

If you want to know a bit more about Days Gone before buying it, though…

Days Gone: Everything you need to know

Days Gone: What’s it all about?

On the surface, Days Gone seems like another tale of zombie survival that draws upon the aesthetics of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. It’s gritty, the protagonist is grizzled and the world bleak – there’s even an air of leafy midwestern America in there to really drive the similarities home. But Days Gone is its own beast. Developed by SIE Bend Studio, Days Gone has more in common with biker-based TV drama Sons of Anarchy than Naughty Dog’s 2013 hit.

To get a better understanding of what the gameplay is like, the extended gameplay trailers for the game give a better idea about how the open-world game is affected by things such as its day and night cycles. Depending on when you venture out into the world, factors such as light and weather not only have an aesthetic impact on your surroundings – they’ll also affect how missions play out.

Case in point, the 2017 E3 trailer above shows protagonist Deacon St John leaving an enclosure on his motorbike at night, and is quickly beset by wolves. In an alternate run-through, the player’s character rides during the day – there are no wolves, but there is a lot of snow, and this makes it harder to stick to the road. Weather conditions will also change how the game’s zombies – called Freakers – act, either thinning them out or emboldening them to group in greater numbers. Check it out for yourself in the video below.

The story of Days Gone tells an open-world tale of survival, with zombies like the ones from World War Z infesting the area. At the start of the game, you find Deacon trying to survive with his best friend, Boozer. Having lost everything important to him because of them, Deacon has a personal vendetta against the Freaker hordes (Days Gone’s name for the infected masses), the reason for which you’ll gradually learn as the game progresses.

For some unknown reason, Deacon and Boozer have also gained the attention of a local, murderous cult called the Rippers, who are intent on finding the two of them at any cost.

Before the outbreak of Freakers, however, Deacon St John was a member of a motorcycle gang. Now, at the end of the world. he’s become a bounty hunter and his penchant for Ash Ketchum’s headwear style is matched only by his mistrust of established communities and general violent hatred for the “Freakers” themselves.

The opening hours of Days Gone reveal that it has only been 2 years since the “freaker” plague started, which means the game barely qualifies for the title of ‘post-apocalyptic.’ As you progress through the game, you’ll find out what caused the plague, as well as why Deacon is so incessantly moody (could it be saddle sores?). The game also features fast travel, large metropolitan areas, and no shortage of loot collecting and crafting.

The totally customisable motorcycle is the star of the show: not the most obvious choice for surviving the apocalypse, but your best method of transport given that the road systems of the USA are in a state of total disrepair. In fact, Days Gone features a network of “Broken Roads” that require a certain level of driving finesse to navigate. You’ll have to keep an eye out for ambient events (including the wolves and subsequent clothes-line featured in the trailer) as well as general road blockages that will force you off-road. These events are dynamic, and will force you to rethink your approach to navigating the open world.

Since Days Gone takes place in an open-world environment, its gameplay is reasonably open-ended. You can tackle a situation in any way you please, and the world behaviour changes depending on what time of day it is. For instance, during the day Freakers are far weaker and less likely to travel in huge packs or be too much of a threat. At night, however, huge hordes are a frequent occurrence and the shufflers are faster and more powerful than in the daytime.
