Netflix is free to download, although you will, of course, need a subscription to use it. These start at £6 per month for a basic package, and go up to £9 for a premium package. The interface is slick and user-friendly, and high-quality Netflix Originals content abounds – including household names such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards and Master of None. The app will even match users up with TV shows it thinks they’ll like, with a percentage calculating your theoretical alignment with each match (for example, Sherlock: 96% match).

BBC iPlayer

The iPlayer Apple TV app is free to download and free to use, that is, presuming you’ve got a TV licence. With the app you get live BBC channels, in addition to catch-up TV. The formatting of the app is commendably simple, with boxes designating most popular shows making it even easier to navigate. BBC iPlayer is replete with dependable, high-quality audiovisual content – a British staple: the Victoria sponge of Apple TV apps.

A retro classic revived. Everyone’s old favourite is now available for Apple TV – and it’s free! The basic premise remains – eat PAC-DOTS and ghosts – but the game has received a facelift, injected with 15 new gaming phenomena including power-ups, lasers and tornados. You can buy unlimited credits for £4, and there’s a host of extra material that can be unlocked with other in-app purchases. Once you amass 256 PAC-DOTS, prepare for great things…

Alto’s Adventure

Everyone’s favourite endless snowboarding odyssey translates brilliantly on Apple TV; it’s easy to maintain control with the one-button system, and the Alpine vistas look great on a bigger screen. There are tricks and bonuses to keep the intrigue flowing as your soar down the mountains. Plus, odds are you’ll already have this one installed, so can download it for free on Apple TV. Smiles all round.

Kitchen Stories

Just because it’s an entertainment platform doesn’t mean Apple TV needs to be used solely for TV and gaming. Kitchen Stories is a recipe hub with a huge selection of videos, tips, tricks and recipes for everything from avocado ice cream (5 mins) to ham and cheese buckwheat crepes (25 mins) to Black Forest cake (115 mins). Download the Apple TV Kitchen Stories app to unleash a world of culinary delights at your fingertips.

We will update this page with more download-worthy Apple TV apps as they become available over the course of 2018.
