La Liga’s marquee fixture, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, March 1 at 8pm GMT.
There’s just a point separating the two sides at the top of the table. Barca currently lead the way following a 5-0 win over Eibar last weekend, a result that saw them leapfrog Madrid, who lost 1-0 to mid-table Levante.
Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid team also suffered defeat in the Champions League during the week, throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at home to Manchester City on Wednesday. To make matters worse for Los Blancos, captain Sergio Ramos was sent off for the 26th time in his career.
Barca fared slightly better, fighting back from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Italian side Napoli.
The last La Liga game between the two sides took place in mid-December and resulted in the first goalless draw in the fixture for 17 years. Given the league standings and the fact that Barcelona are playing away, they would probably take that result again if offered it.
Six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi netted four times in Barca’s win over Eibar, taking him to a total of 18 league goals this season, five ahead of Real’s Karim Benzema and seven ahead of teammate Luis Suarez.
