The original Surface Laptop is now under £500

Only a penny under, but it still counts

Are you in the market for a slim, stylish laptop that won’t let you down? Well, if you don’t mind dropping back a generation, then this Amazon deal on the original Microsoft Surface Laptop is definitely worth a look.
Currently going for £499.99, the version on sale packs an Intel Core m3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It comes with the somewhat limited Windows 10 S, but thankfully unlocking it to the full power of Windows 10 is now as easy as pressing a button – though it is a one-way switch.
Okay, that’s not as powerful as the second-generation laptops that pack i5 chips and 8GB of RAM, but it should be perfectly fine for web browsing, productivity, watching videos and even some light gaming, and makes it an appealing (and cheaper!) alternative to Apple’s 12in MacBook.
And otherwise it’s a wonderful laptop. As mobile technology editor Nathan Spendelow wrote in his review: “Not only is this a gorgeous machine to look at, but it’s also a highly practical machine that’s ideally suited to life on campus and beyond.
“In fact, even if you’re not a student, you should take a long, hard look at the Surface Laptop before splashing out elsewhere.”
Other than the basic specs, there’s little difference between the Surface Laptop and Surface Laptop 2. And as a user of the second generation myself, I can personally vouch for the quality of the screen, touchpad, keyboard and pretty much everything else that makes a laptop great.
Pro tip, though: under no circumstances have it playing videos in the kitchen when you’re cooking curry on the stove. Those stains don’t come out of the luxurious velvety alcantara cover it comes with. Or so I’ve heard.
