The OnePlus 6 is a bona fide Black Friday bargain

No, it’s not the 6T, but the OnePlus 6 is very nearly as good – and currently £100 cheaper

If you’ve been reading Expert Reviews (or any other tech site – I forgive you) for a while, you’ll know that there’s a standard refrain in most high-end smartphone reviews. “This smartphone is good,” it’ll say, “but the OnePlus 3/3T/5/5T/6 is better and cheaper.”

So it’s a treat to be able to say that the OnePlus 6 is even cheaper for Black Friday. It’s down to just £399 – a £70 saving on its usual RRP. It’s not yet showing up in stock on the OnePlus website, where the deal was announced, but it is available from Amazon.

Smartphone experts can rightly point out that this isn’t the newest OnePlus model – and that’s true. The OnePlus 6T is out now, and I reviewed it for Expert Reviews myself. It’s great, but is it £100 better than the OnePlus 6? Definitely not. In fact, most of the internals are the same, right down to the Snapdragon 845 processor and dual-camera array. The biggest difference is the in-screen fingerprint scanner, which is a cool party trick but, again, not worth paying £100 for.

That means it’s still a performance match for the best Android handsets out there, going toe-to-toe with the Samsung Galaxy S9, the Sony Xperia XZ3 and the LG G7. The difference, of course, is that all those handsets go for a lot more. As Nathan said in his OnePlus 6 review: “the decision to add a Snapdragon 845 processor to a phone that costs a good £300 less than its similarly-equipped competition is a seriously smart move.

“This is a smartphone that’s just as meaty as its rivals, with a not-so-outrageous price tag attached. That was always going to work in the OnePlus 6’s favour, wasn’t it?”
