Very powerful speakers that would suit a large room, but they’re expensive

These speakers are part of Teufel’s multi-room audio system. Other products in the range include the Teufel Raumfeld 3CSM and Teufel Raumfeld Connector, plus the Teufel Raumfeld Speaker S.

As Teufel’s mid-range wireless speaker, the Raumfeld Speaker M is best used to add streaming audio to a second room. Each satellite has a 130mm woofer and a 25mm tweeter, and is powered by an integrated 120W amplifier in the left speaker. This is more than enough for a medium-sized room, but you may already have a more powerful speaker system in your living room as part of a home cinema setup. If so, the Teufel Raumfeld Connector may be a better choice.

Even so, we found that we rarely had to push the volume past 50 per cent because the pair is incredibly loud. We were impressed with the amount of bass, even without a dedicated subwoofer, and the mid-range sounded clear. The high-end sounded a little too crisp when we listened to low-bandwidth internet radio, but there were no such problems with lossless files. Unlike other streamers which are single units, the two speakers create accurate stereo separation that’s as flexible as the space in your room.

The rectangular satellites aren’t going to win any design awards, but they still look gorgeous, with the grey speaker shields in place or without. We particularly liked the aluminium detailing on the lower edge, including the volume dial and power button.

The left satellite is actively powered, and contains the Wi-Fi antenna, analogue RCA auxiliary input, Ethernet and USB ports. Like the other components in the range, you can connect a memory stick or external hard disk and access it using the Raumfeld Controller.

If you own a high-end speaker system already, the Raumfeld Speaker M isn’t going to give it a run for its money. It also seems a little overkill for a small bedroom or office, but there’s no doubting its acoustic ability. The Sonos alternative is over £150 cheaper, however, so we aren’t convinced of its value for money.
