From portraying twin business partners in The Social Network to enchanting audiences in Call Me by Your Name, Armie Hammer has been one of the most understated talents to come out of Hollywood in the last decade. His career took an unexpected turn, however, when in 2021 an anonymous Instagram account leaked several messages and voice notes from the actor which revealed him to have extremely unsavoury sexual desires.
In the months that followed, many women bravely took to social media to share their experiences of the actor. Soon, it became clear that Hammer had been in various situations in which he acted without consent and even presented cannibalistic desires on a number of occasions. Now, amidst allegations and investigations of rape and sexual assault, a three-part documentary series is releasing to shed some light on this all-too-familiar Hollywood story. House of Hammer is a brand-new tell-all documentary series that will debut on 2 September.

Why is it called “House” of Hammer?
Any classic horror fans may be thinking this docuseries has drawn its name from the 1980 horror show “Hammer: House of Horror”. Due to the unpleasant subject matter it’s set to cover, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was an intentional nod.
More probably, the name House of Hammer comes from the name of the anonymous Instagram account that first broke silence on Armie Hammer’s sexual habits, called House of Effie. The account, is speculated to be linked to one of the alleged rape victims of Hammer, who we know publicly only by the name Effie. Despite this somewhat obvious conclusion being jumped to, Effie’s lawyer has declined to confirm if the two “Effies” are linked.
Of course, the main reason the documentary will take the name “house” of Hammer, is because the actor’s murky family history will also be looked into. The Hammers are a somewhat infamous family thanks to Armie’s great-grandfather, who was dubbed “Lenin’s chosen capitalist” by many press outlets in the 60s. Armand Hammer (senior) had close business dealings with the Soviet Union while running Occidental Petroleum from 1957 until his death in 1990.
The Hammer family benefited greatly from Armand senior’s business efforts, as he left behind a corporate empire after his death. One of Armand’s grandchildren has even made comparisons to her family’s dynamic being extremely close to the show Succession, and that seems fitting. Julian, Armand’s son, famously killed a man on his 26th birthday over a gambling debt, and Michael, the actor’s father, has piloted many business ventures that have supposedly had detrimental impacts to the family’s fortune.
In the trailer for the documentary, many witnesses can be heard issuing words of caution about the whole Hammer family. With old money, eyewitnesses and decades of stories to tell, the three-part series is bound to shed light on a lot of this house’s darkest corners.
How to watch House of Hammer in the UK
House of Hammer is a Discovery original, meaning it will be added to the network’s streaming service, Discovery+ on 2 September. Discovery+ launched in the UK back in 2020, meaning you can sign up and watch its catalogue of content as of now.

Alternatively, you can get the benefits of Discovery+ via an Amazon Prime membership. Discovery+ in the UK is now a channel on Prime Video, meaning you can pay an additional fee to watch Discovery+ content through the Prime Video app.
