How to watch Nope: Jordan Peele’s latest thriller will be available to stream from 19 November

Fancy watching (or re-watching) Jordan Peele’s new thriller? Here’s how to watch Nope from across the globe

Nope is Jordan Peele’s latest thriller, and since its UK release on 12 August, it’s been met with great reviews from critics, gaining a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Until now, audiences have been wondering when they’ll be able to stream Nope from home.

While Nope has been praised for its tense atmosphere, stunning visuals and hugely talented cast, its main criticism has been that it’s too conceptually complex, leaving viewers baffled by its many unclear meanings. Nope has more references and dilemmas than you can shake a stick at and it actively resists simple answers and resolutions, so it’s definitely a film that calls for a re-watch.

Now, viewers could trot back to the cinema to watch the film on the big screen, but then they’d lose out on the ability to pause the film or rewatch something specific they missed the first time around. That’s why the digital release of Nope couldn’t come at a better time – allowing viewers to deconstruct this mind-boggling thriller with all their home comforts. Or, it gives the more faint-hearted of us the option to hide behind the sofa when things get a little scary.

What is Nope?

Based on the forgotten story of the first ever movie star, Nope is a movie about movie-making and contemporary Western attitudes towards race. It was released in the UK on 12 August 2022, after its release in the US in mid-July.

The lead characters are said to be descendants of the first ever movie star, a black man who was the jockey for Eadweard Muybridge’s famous series of photographs, The Horse in Motion. When viewed in sequence, the photographs resembled a moving image but despite his movie star role, the jockey’s name and story were never recorded. So, much like the rest of Jordan Peele’s horror movies, Nope is centred around erasure.

Despite having an illustrious background in acting, in the past few years Peele has made a name for himself directing Hollywood thriller films. His work is renowned for using the horror genre as a vehicle to provide cutting social commentary on race, contemporary America, and moviemaking as a whole. You may recognise his previous movies, the critically acclaimed Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), which both scored over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nope is the third horror movie Peele has directed.

When Today asked Peele about his vision for Nope, he said that the main idea he wanted to explore was “this idea of making a spectacle, making something people would have to see,” calling modern America “a society of spectacle.” Through this, he admits that his film uncovers the damaging effects of this reality. He says: “The idea of spectacle harms us in many ways, whether it’s something that we are so obsessed by that we give it too much power, […] or if it’s because we use the spectacle to distract ourselves from the truth, we have this very dark relationship with it.”

It’s down to audiences to make their own conclusions about this film, which is what makes it such a great film to watch and discuss with friends. Or, you can fall down the rabbit hole of online commentary about Nope, which is so plentiful that it’s overwhelming trying to piece together a consensus about the film’s overall meaning.
