All the information about Oculus' next VR headset, set for release in 2019

Oculus has just announced its new virtual reality, the Oculus Quest. Coming in Spring 2019, the Quest is positioned as the midpoint between the company’s wired, high-end Oculus Rift, and what we dubbed their “VR system for the masses”, the Oculus Go.

Available in the USA first, the 64GB Quest will cost $399 – almost the same as the Rift, but with the caveat that the Rift requires a higher-end PC to run.

Oculus Quest: Everything we know

It’s Oculus’ first all-in-one, standalone VR headset to come with six degrees of freedom (6DOF). The Quest makes it simple to get going right away, with no need for a PC, no wires and no external sensors.

It comes with positional tracking and Touch controllers and improved built-in audio, while the display resolution is the same as the Go at 1,600 x 1,440 per eye. Meanwhile, a lens spacing adjustment system lets you maximise visual comfort.

Over 50 titles will be available at launch, with popular games such as Robo Recall, The Climb and Moss among those on offer.

Oculus also unveiled Oculus Insight. That’s the company’s new technology that powers inside-out tracking, Guardian safety system, and Touch controller tracking. The system uses four ultra-wide-angle sensors and computer vision algorithms to track your exact position in real time without the need for any external sensors.

What this means is that you can go beyond roomscale. With no external cameras, you can move freely, confined only by the area of the room you’re in, rather than the reach of the cameras. If it works as promised, this could be a genuine gamechanger.

Oculus also announced Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series. The three-part Star Wars experience is written by David S. Goyer, known for his work on Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises, and takes place between Star Wars – Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It will launch on the Quest next year.
