Finally, a fold-up three-pin plug that's made for travel
Posted on 15 Sep 2009 at 16:56
The most annoying thing about the British electrical system is the huge three-pin square plugs we have to carry around.
Fortunately, these could be a thing of the past thanks to a new design listed for the James Dyson Award.
The UK Folding Plug System fits the bottom two pins of a standard plug on a rotating platform. When rotated they line up vertically with the central pin, and allow a three-pin plug to be folded up into a shape the thickness of a standard pen.
The system also allows up to three plugs to be connected in a multi-way adaptor that's only the same size as a regular plug.
We think it's brilliant and want one now, but we could be in for a bit of a wait. Talking to the designer we were told that the design had to go through health and safety checks first before it could be put into manufacturing. Hopefully this won't take long.
