The Google Pixel 6a is shaping up to be an attention-grabbing and well-priced smartphone ahead of its release on 28 July. The preorder deals have already begun, with iD Mobile serving up the pick of the bunch so far: the handset with unlimited data for just £27/mth on a two-year contract, with £30 upfront. And, as a sweetener, you’ll be treated to a free pair of four-star Google Pixel Buds A-Series earbuds worth £100. Phew!
By our calculations, this Google Pixel 6a deal will save you a rocking £205 compared to if you bought the phone (£399), unlimited iD Mobile SIM (£16/mth for two years) and earbuds (£100) separately. We’ll be publishing our full review of the Google Pixel 6a very soon, but it already looks like a crowd-pleaser. Like its “a” predecessors, it’s a cut-price version of the company’s main flagship, the incredible Pixel 6, which we garlanded with five stars and a Best Buy award in our review.
However, there’s an important difference this time. Taking its cue from Apple’s recent iPhone SE 3, Google has kept the same processor (the company’s Tensor) inside, while making compromises elsewhere. That means you’ll be getting the same amount of performance grunt with the Pixel 6a as the brilliant Pixel 6 Pro. That will be backed by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
So what’s the trade-off? To keep the cost down, Google has replaced the main 50MP camera sensor of the Pixel 6 with a 12MP one on the Pixel 6a. That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t take superb photos, though – Google’s phones are the best of the best in that department.
As for the fantastic freebie, we awarded the £100 Google Pixel Buds A-Series four stars out of five for their impressive sound, nifty compact design and seamless inclusion of Google Assistant. They’ll be the perfect companions for your new handset.
Finally, in our four-star review of iD Mobile’s service, we praised the company’s low prices (as this deal illustrates), consistently improving 5G performance and range of long or short-term plans.
