The new Samsung foldable phone is out now - here's what you need to know

The Galaxy Z Flip was unveiled in all its folding glory at Samsung’s Unpacked event on 11 February in San Francisco. You can read our hands-on here, but for the full story, you’ve come to the right place.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Everything you need to know

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip news: New folding phone breaks just as easily as its predecessor

It hasn’t been out a month yet, but already the Galaxy Z Flip is suffering at the hands of tech journalists. A “torture test” conducted by Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) shows that the Z Flip’s new Ultra Thin Glass is potentially just as susceptible to damage as the plastic screen of the Galaxy Fold:

In essence, what happens in the above video is that Nelson puts the UTG display through a series of increasingly tough scratch tests using special utensils (called Mohs hardness picks).

Where most modern displays might begin to show signs of scarring at the seventh hurdle, the Z Flip is damaged by the time Nelson reaches the third. By the fourth, Nelson reports that the screen is being physically rent apart by the knife. Gosh.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip release date: When can you buy it?

The Z Flip is available for purchase right now… in limited quantities. It is available in the UK, via Carphone Warehouse or O2: at the time of writing, you can purchase one via the O2 website with the caveat that you’ll have to wait three weeks before the phone ships.

Carphone Warehouse, meanwhile, seems to be offering the phone to customers with no waiting period, although this is obviously subject to change. If you’re hoping to ship the phone from the US via the Samsung website (a hit-and-miss strategy, given that the phone is currently sold out) be aware that the earliest shipping date is 29 February.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip price: How much will it cost?

Brace yourself: the Galaxy Z Flip will set you back an astonishing £1,300. It’s also available on contract starting at an equally impressive £75/mth with a £70 upfront fee. That’s on Vodafone, with 20GB of data. Again, Carphone Warehouse offers the broadest selection of contracts.
