The Samsung Z will be the world's first Tizen-powered phone

Samsung has announced its first phone powered by the Tizen operating system. Named the Samsung Z, it's the world's first Tizen-powered handset. The phone will have a 4.8in AMOLED display with a 1,280x720 resolution and a quad core 2.3GHz processor.

For those unfamiliar with Tizen, it's an open source operating system much like Android that's available for anyone to change or modify. It can be used with a whole range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to netbooks and smart TVs, but hardware manufacturers will still need their own proprietary software in order for Tizen to work with their own devices.

It's not yet clear how much Samsung will customise the Tizen operating system for the Samsung Z, but from the first official press shots, it looks like the Z will have a remarkably similar home screen to the company's current version of Android.

The company also claims it will allow the phone to have a faster start-up time and more multi-tasking capabilities. It will also support 2D and 3D graphics, smoother scrolling and have improved rendering performance for web browsing.

"Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs," said DJ Lee, President and Head of Samsung's Global Sales & Marketing Office.

"The Samsung Z integrates the power and adaptability of the Tizen platform, enabling users to browse the web faster and utilize applications more effectively."

Other specs for the phone include an 8-megapixel sensor on the back of the camera, 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD, a 2,600mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate sensor. The phone will also weigh 136g and measure 138x70x8.5mm.

It's certainly an impressive specification, but it may be a while before we see it on shop shelves. So far, Samsung has only announced that the Z will be coming to Russia in Q3 of this year, but we're assuming other territories will soon follow.
