Windows 10 update breaks the internet: Latest roll-out is causing network adapters to fail, Start menus to crash and more
Windows 10 KB4515384 is also causing problems with the Start menu, Windows Search and even game audio
The latest cumulative update for Windows 10 is causing network adapters to fail, breaking the Start menu and messing with audio features, according to an increasing number of reports.
At the time of release, on 10 September, Microsoft said there were no known issues with the Windows 10 KB4515384 update, however reports on forums, Reddit and Windows 10’s Feedback Hub have since led the company to update the changelog.
Microsoft has now confirmed that KB4515384 causes Windows 10’s Start menu to show error messages including: “We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in,” and “Critical Error – Your Start menu isn’t working.” Meanwhile, the problem with Windows Search causes a blank screen to appear any time a user tries to search for something.
The company has said it has received reports “some users are having issues related to the Start menu and Windows Desktop Search”, is currently investigating what went wrong and will give an update when more information is available. It has also acknowledged that “audio in certain games is quieter or different” following the update.
However, at the time of writing, it is yet to acknowledge the network adapter faults.
According to reports from Windows Latest, one user on the Feedback Hub wrote the update is causing a code 10 error to appear when trying to connect to the network. Another claims KB4515384 has broken the Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapters. This problem appears to be affecting Intel network hardware, and has been seen in both MSI and Gigabyte boards.
The only guaranteed way to currently resolve this networking issue is to uninstall the cumulative update until Microsoft acknowledges the bug and issues a further update to fix the problem. Some users have successfully solved it by disabling and re-enabling the adapter in Device Manager and then rebooting the system, although this isn’t working for everyone.
Windows 10 KB4515384 was released on 10 September to fix security bugs in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, networking technologies, and input devices such as a mouse, keyboard, or stylus. It also included updates for verifying user names and passwords, storing and managing files and was designed to fix a high CPU usage bug.
