HDR arriving on Sony’s 4K TVs this summer

Sony X93C TV

If Android TV and built-in Youview weren't enough, Sony adds HDR support to two of its 2015 4K TVs

Sony has announced that its X93C and X94C 4K TVs will be getting high dynamic range (HDR) support via a network update this summer. We’ve already had a small taste of HDR on Samsung’s curved JS9000 4K TV, but HDR effectively allows a TV to display a wider range of brightness levels between the whitest whites and blackest blacks, making everything appear that much brighter and more realistic.

Sony also hopes that its X-tended Dynamic Range technology will boost the TVs’ contrast levels even further, supposedly delivering even brighter whites and deeper blacks than standard HDR videos. Both the X93C and X94C will also come with Sony’s new 4K X1 processor, which enhances the picture quality of any 4K source, so together they should prove a potent combination for 4K home cinephiles.

4K HDR isn’t the only headline feature of Sony’s new X93C and X94C series, as they’ll also come with Google’s Android TV smart TV interface and built-in YouView, potentially giving Sony one of the most comprehensive smart TV line-ups this year. While we’ve yet to see YouView in action on Sony’s 4K TVs, we have had our first glimpse of Sony’s Android TV on the ultra-slim X90C at CES, which looks to be one of Sony’s most desirable 4K TVs yet.

“Sony has always been the leader in 4K and our exclusive Sony technologies have been at the core of providing TV lovers with the best picture quality, no matter what content they are watching. Our decades of experience allow us to introduce emerging industry standard HDR to our 4K Ultra HD TV series and to reinforce contrast thanks to Sony’s unique technology X-tended Dynamic Range PRO,” said Neil King, Head of Home Entertainment at Sony UK and Ireland. “And now, by pairing our unrivalled picture quality with Android TV, we are setting out to provide our customers with the best user experience possible.”

As you’d expect from a flagship Sony TV, neither of them come cheap. The Sony X93C is available in 55in and 65in models, with prices starting from £2,599, while the 75in-only X94C will set you back a whopping £7,499. Both are available to pre-order online from Sony today.
