Datawind launches UbiSurfer netbook

Datawind has updated its portable web browser - and this time it's bringing Windows along for the ride.
The company has announced that its new UbiSurfer 3G web browsing gadget - based on its existing pocket-sized DataSurfer range - comes equipped with Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, a cut-down platform similar to, and the basis for, Windows Mobile.
The switch to a Windows-based operating system comes alongside the introduction of the SoftMaker Office Suite, a Microsoft Office compatible software package which promises full editing of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without conversion and without losing any fidelity.
Designed to allow access to the Internet wherever you are, the UbiSurfer has in-built 3G broadband, WiFi, and a wired LAN port - something missing from the DataSurfer range. In keeping with the company's previous products a SIM card is provided which allows purchasers to use the Internet for a total of thirty hours per month for the first year after purchase. For the heavier user, Datawind offers unlimited usage for an additional £5.99 per month.
Although the UbiSurfer is likely to be more appealing than the company's earlier efforts, its 7in 800x480 display and mere 128MB of memory along with a positively tiny 1GB of storage is likely to disappoint many - and the device itself is barely more portable than a far more powerful netbook running a fully-fledged version of Windows.
The Ubisurfer is available in the UK now for £159.99, with the first year's Internet access included.
