iPhone owners, rejoice: the Apple Watch Series 3 is being subjected to some pretty special discounts during this Black Friday deals period. If you’re looking for a stylish wearable that doesn’t break the bank, this is a golden opportunity – if you act fast.
Originally, Amazon went and cut over a third off the now-antiquated smartwatch’s usual price, with the 38mm space grey version selling for just £185. This offer flew off the virtual shelves, but don’t fret: the Series 3 watch is the same price (and still in stock) at John Lewis.
Normally we’d caution against buying two-year-old technology, but smartwatches get a bit of a pass on this. The technology moves a bit slower, and the apps are considerably less demanding – indeed, even Apple still stands by the Series 3, keeping it on sale while discontinuing the more recent fourth generation.
So are you missing much by buying the Series 3 over the Series 5? Well, the main additions of the latest model are the always-on screen and the health functions. Being able to detect falls and perform a full electrocardiogram (ECG) test are certainly impressive party tricks, but arguably not essential in a smartwatch.
And for £185, you might decide you’re not too fussy. The Apple Watch Series 3 is still a fine bit of technology, and the praise Tom gave it in our original review still broadly rings true today. “The Apple Watch Series 3 in either 4G or GPS-only guise is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of platform, and for most people the best all-round fitness tracker as well,” he wrote. “If you own an iPhone and you’re looking to buy a smartwatch, it’s the only sensible option.”
At £185, it’s now even more sensible if you don’t need Apple’s latest and greatest.
