The Witcher 4: Will we even see Geralt’s return?

Never say never, but not for a while

The Witcher 4 is, for now at least, purely theoretical. CD Projekt Red has made it quite clear that its attentions are purely focused on Cyberpunk 2077. Does that mean that it’s the end of Geralt’s adventures? Maybe not.

Read on to find out everything we know about a possible The Witcher 4.

The Witcher 4: Will it ever happen?

CD Projekt RED hasn’t ruled out any more games in The Witcher series, but you’re unlikely to see one in the next year, or likely even the year after that. Right now, the studio is hard at work on Cyberpunk 2077, which itself has no firm release date. Last year, the company’s co-founder Marcin Iwinsky told Eurogamer that for now, the series is done.

“As we said before, never say never [but] right now it’s really Blood and Wine,” he said. “This is the end. Blood and Wine is [the] closing and there won’t be any Witcher anytime soon – if there ever will be one. And I would really like to see how people feel about it, if they will enjoy it.”

“I can assure you we are not working on another Witcher,” he added.

Okay, but that was last year. So what about in 2017, has the studio changed its mind? Well, his tone has kind of softened – the prospects of The Witcher being completely abandoned seems to be receding, but at the same time there are clearly no immediate plans. During a CD Projekt RED investor call, Iwinsky said that they would consider new Witcher games “at some point”, before dampening expectations by adding the series “deserves some rest.”

“For the past ten years, the team has been working on swords and castles and medieval Slavic monsters. So I think it’s time for some guns, androids, and some ammo.”

Of course, The Witcher is getting a new TV series on Netflix. If that takes off, then I’m pretty confident the studio could be tempted back into the Witcherverse.

The Witcher 4: Where could it go?

Okay, okay. So there’s definitely no The Witcher 4 in sight, but if and when CD Projekt RED is drawn back in, how could the series continue? After all, Blood and Wine ended a number of different ways, depending on how you played it.

The most obvious option is some kind of Geralt-themed prequel, featuring a younger lead. Alternatively, his adopted daughter Ciri could take the reigns as the new protagonist. A playable character in The Witcher 3, it wouldn’t be too big a leap to give her the starring role – although, without giving too much away in terms of spoilers, her fate is dramatically different depending on how Blood and Wine ended for you.

But the real beauty of The Witcher’s universe is that there are hundreds of untold stories. A whole new arc is probably the most likely approach – and as such, it’s probably best that CD Projekt RED is taking some time off. You need a break from Nilfgaard to really imagine how best to proceed.
