After losing the first Test of the series by four wickets to West Indies, England bounced back resoundingly to win the second Test match by 113 runs. The biggest change to England’s line-up for the second Test came before a ball was bowled as the team made four changes to the squad that took the field in Southampton’s opening Test. Joe Denly made way for full-time skipper Joe Root, and fast bowlers James Anderson, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood were replaced by Sam Curran, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes.
Thankfully, England are clearly spoiled when it comes to fast-bowling talent, but in the second Test the team clicked as a unit. Batting first, England declared for 469 runs and the visitors always had an uphill climb from thereon. Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes scored centuries, while Broad and Woakes picked up three wickets each to bowl out the Windies for 287 runs.
With a commanding second-innings lead and a day lost to rain, England promoted Stokes up the order to accelerate the run rate and the all-rounder obliged scoring runs as if he was playing a T20 International. The English bowlers then combined to bowl out the visitors for just 198 runs on the final day.
With Anderson and Archer returning to the side, England have clearly favoured experience and raw pace. Ben Stokes is in the form of his life and with Root’s captaincy, England seem to have snatched back the early advantage that the West Indies gained in the opening Test match.
