While Fury has been busy hurling insults Whyte’s way – describing his opponent as the Vauxhall Corsa to his Ferrari – the World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered that the fight purse be split 80/20 between Fury and Whyte, meaning “The Gypsy King” walks away with £21.5m to Whyte’s £5.5m (regardless of outcome). Whyte has since launched an arbitration against the WBC and has been absent from his promotional duties in protest.
Fury’s own preparations haven’t been without distraction either, after his long-time friend and said-to-be advisor Daniel Kinahan – plus other members of the Irish Kinahan organised crime group – were hit with international sanctions and $5m price-tag by the United States for any information that will lead to their financial destruction. Fury maintains that he has no business or advisory relationship with Kinahan.
All the outside noise will be temporarily forgotten come Saturday night however, when Fury – the younger man by eight months with a seven inch reach and five foot height advantage – looks to retain his WBC title. Fury has never been beaten as a professional fighter; only a draw with Deontay Wilder slightly blemishes his perfect record. Meanwhile, Whyte has a similarly strong record with only two losses in 30 fights, the latest loss being to Alexander Povetkin which Whyte has since avenged in March 2021.
