Get a free Echo Dot with the excellent Ring Video Doorbell

Two steps on the way to a full smart home

Black Friday is fast approaching, which means you’re guaranteed big reductions at Amazon – and that’s doubly true of items that the company has full control over.

Which is perhaps why this strange bundle has appeared on the ecommerce giant’s site: Buy a Ring Video Doorbell and get a third-generation Echo Dot free of charge. The pair is yours for £89.

You can connect the two, but the keyword in Ring Video Doorbell is “video”. Its main strength is being able to see who’s at the front door – be it on your phone or smart screen. Without a screen, the Echo Dot is reduced to just saying “someone is at the front door” – which is better than nothing, but possibly still not the most obvious choice for a bundle.

But I’m being a bit unfair here, because there are two things to remember: 1) Both products are very good, and 2) At £89, this is very good value. Lest we forget, the Ring Video Doorbell on its own is £89, while the Echo Dot retails for £50 – so a decent saving to be had here.

I reviewed the latter myself, and it’s a huge step forward for the Dot, combining a new sleeker look with a massively improved sound quality. But if you’re a real audiophile, you can still connect it to your own beefy sound setup using the AUX port.

As for the Ring Video Doorbell, I can’t offer a personal viewpoint, as I only reviewed the Pro version (it’s very odd to have two doorbells, so I don’t expect to review any more in the near future). But our head of reviews, Jonathan Bray, seemed to like it: “the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is the best product of its type you can buy,” he wrote in his review. “It may not be the cheapest, but it delivers all the features you need for a price that’s reasonably accessible.”

It’s even more reasonable when you get a free Echo Dot as part of the bargain.
