Jessops 10.4″ Hi-Res 2GB Frame review

We first reviewed Jessops’ 10.4″ photo frame back in April, but this new version costs £20 less than original, but comes with an sizeable 2GB of RAM, compared to the original’s 256MB.

Other new features include built-in Arcsoft enhancement software, which can increase contrast and smooth faces in images. It works fairly well, but we recommend that you edit your photos on your PC before uploading them to the photo frame. This is an easy task, as the PC software will resize your images to the frame’s 800×600 resolution, so that you can fit more photos on the device. We were pleased to see the orientation sensor, which automatically rotates pictures based on which way round you have the frame.

Other than that it’s business as usual, with the frame retaining its elegant look, thanks to the wide black acrylic bezel. There are slots for every common type of memory card, although we found SD cards difficult to remove, as there’s no spring mechanism to eject them. If you don’t have a memory card, there’s a USB port, so that you can plug in flash memory directly.

Menus are incredibly easy to navigate, with five main modes: photo, music, video, file and time. The latter option shows an ugly calendar with both analogue and digital clocks. The frame’s intelligent enough to display all MP3 and video files in a single list, even if they’re stored in multiple folders. However, we didn’t like the fact that filenames are truncated to just eight characters.

Image quality is excellent, with accurate colours. The bright screen makes sure that you can see your masterpieces in all but the harshest of sunlight. But, there are several annoyances that let the product down. First, you can’t set an on- and off-timer, so you’ll have to deal manually with the frame when you want to use it. Secondly, it won’t display photos for longer than 11 seconds in its slideshow mode. Finally, it consumes a whopping 3W of power in standby mode.

That said, for just under £50, you get a high-quality image. It’s a great buy, but we wish the little problems could be ironed out.
