Moto G7 Power was a bargain at £179 – now it’s £109

Our favourite budget phone is now just £109

For a long time, we’ve argued that the Moto G7 Power is the best budget smartphone you can buy. It strikes the right balance between looks, processing grunt, camera quality and stamina to make it a snip at its £179 launch price.

Now at Giffgaff, you can get the handset SIM-free for just £99. An £80 saving on its original RRP. Being Giffgaff, you have to buy a Goodybag with it at the same time, giving you a month’s minutes, texts and data. The cheapest of these is £10, and you’re under no pressure to renew if you don’t want to. That means the grand total is £109.

While Motorola has released the first member of its G8 range – baffling the Plus version of a handset that doesn’t exist – the G7 Power is still a pretty good bet. At the time of release it performed better than similarly priced Nokia 5.1 and Honor 10 Lite, and while it’s still at its heart a budget phone, it handles most things pretty well considering.
Then there’s the “Power” part of its name: this doesn’t refer to processing grunt, but the battery pack, which is a massive 5,000mAh cell. Suffice it to say that this, along with the 720p screen, leads to a battery that runs and runs – it went 26 hours and 22 minutes in our standard test.
Finally, the camera is a real treat for the price. At the time of my review, I declared that the Moto G7 had the best phone camera under £300, and the G7 Power wasn’t far behind at £60 less. In other words, you won’t find a better smartphone camera for £99.

In fact, you’re unlikely to find a better phone for £99, period. As I said at the end of my review: “all this for £179 is a complete steal.” There are certainly better phones, but if you want one of them, you’ll need to stump up a lot more cash. If £99 is your hard limit, then look no further.
