- Adaptable togs so you can use it all year round
- Feels silky and luxurious to the touch
- Good temperature regulation
- Inconsistent filling throughout duvets
- More fasteners would be helpful
- Combined 10.5 might not be enough for the coldest of sleepers
As much as I love natural fillings, synthetic duvets are a popular option for smaller budgets. The flip side of this, however, is that you often have a duvet that feels stiff and unyielding, as well as making loud crinkly noises when you sleep under it. Fortunately, the Emma All Seasons Customisable Duvet has none of these problems, thanks in part to its soft and silky finish.
Despite its synthetic construction, it’s not the cheapest duvet out there. That said, it’s comparable with many other synthetic duvets on the premium end of the market. How does it measure up to the best duvets we’ve reviewed? Let’s find out…
Emma All Seasons Customisable Duvet: What do you get for the money?
Emma’s Customisable Duvet, like many all seasons options, technically consists of two duvets – one with a 7 tog rating and the other rated at 3.5 tog. Each duvet has snap fasteners at its four corners so that you can attach the two together to make one 10.5 tog duvet for colder nights.
The duvets are filled with a recycled polyester, encased in a 100% cotton cover, and the neat border is emblazoned with little Emma logos all the way round (just in case you forget who makes the duvet). It’s machine washable at 60°C and can be tumble dried on a low setting, but avoid bleaching it.
The duvet is available in four sizes, with a single retailing for £115. This increases to £140 for a double, £165 for a king and £185 for a super king. This makes it slightly more expensive than the Soak & Sleep Soft As Down All Seasons duvet at £119 (double), as well as both Homescapes Indulgent Pure Mulberry Silk Blend duvets combined (4.5 tog and 13.5 tog) at £100. That said, it’s cheaper than many all-natural rivals, such as the Larke Nature’s Blend duvet at £180 (double, 10.5 tog). It’s also worth bearing in mind that Emma regularly offers promotional discounts on its site, so there’s a good chance that you won’t need to pay full price.
The Emma duvet arrives vacuum-packed in a box but comes without a storage bag, an otherwise neat addition that we’ve become accustomed to expect with pricier duvets. You do get free delivery though, and free returns with a 14-night trial to give you a couple of weeks to decide if it’s right for you (if not, you can return it for a full refund).
What did we like?
Both Emma duvets felt really lovely and silky to the touch, mimicking the feel of far more expensive all-natural rivals. They felt really soft against the skin and, best of all, didn’t make any loud crinkling noises as I moved about underneath them.
I was a bit worried that – even with both separate duvets combined – the Emma All Seasons Customisable Duvet would not be enough for the coldest nights, especially for a colder sleeper like myself. To the contrary, it did a great job of keeping me warm. And on the flip side, my husband, who sleeps hot, found the Emma duvets breathable and temperature regulating. This is perhaps down to the cotton cover, which helps to wick away moisture and keeps the duvet from feeling clammy. These duvets do the difficult job of being cosy yet breathable. That said, I’d warn that the coldest of sleepers among you might want something a bit more substantial than a combined 10.5 tog duvet for the winter months.
What could be improved?
I did find that the filling wasn’t always consistent in its thickness throughout the Emma duvets, with some sections feeling puffier than others. This didn’t detract too much from the sleeping experience, but I would have preferred a more evenly distributed filling. It was also quite tricky to tell which duvet was which in terms of their respective tog ratings and – unhelpfully – they aren’t labelled.
I also wish that the Emma duvets had more fasteners along their sides. Instead, they only have one at each corner, which doesn’t feel the most secure and can make getting both duvets into a single duvet cover quite challenging.
Should you buy the Emma All Seasons Customisable duvet?
The Emma duvet is well-made, breathable and feels great to sleep under. Both 7 and 3.5 tog duvets do a great job of regulating temperature, and I think most sleepers will get on very well with them.
I would urge slight caution if, like me, you’re a bit of a reptile and get particularly cold at night: you may want to opt for something a bit cosier than the combined 10.5 tog offered here. I know I was very glad of an electric blanket when temperatures were particularly low. Overall, however, the Emma duvet is a comfortable and silky duvet that will give you a comfortable night’s sleep.
