D-Link's 802.11g router can be bought alone for £59 including VAT, or with a USB adaptor for £77 including VAT. If you need a USB adaptor this may appear to be good value, but we were underwhelmed by both devices.
The configuration interface is difficult to use. You often have to restart the router after changing a setting, but the restart button is hidden away. We were also disappointed by the transfer speeds we achieved when connecting this router to a Centrino notebook. Its speed of just 6.8Mbit/s in our 1m test was the worst in the group, although it did better over 15m. Its speed in our 25m test was above only the two routers that failed to connect.
D-Link's USB adaptor performed well in both our 1m and 15m tests, achieving speeds of nearly 13Mbit/s. Its score of 3.7Mbit/s in our 25m test wasn't as quick as the adaptors from Linksys or Belkin, but at least it completed the test. D-Link's DWL-G630 CardBus adaptor was far more impressive. It proved to be one of the fastest 802.11g cards, and its speed of 4Mbit/s in our 25m test was the third best result in the entire group. This is especially striking since the DWL-G630 is the cheapest CardBus card here.
D-Link's DWL-G630 CardBus adaptor is a great buy if you want to add a computer to an existing 802.11g wireless network. The router isn't so good, though, as it's fiddly to configure and slow when connected to a Centrino notebook. The DWL-G122 USB adaptor performs acceptably, but we prefer Belkin's faster G+ MIMO USB Adaptor.
