Astonishing performance coupled with triple-monitor support makes the HD 5870 a desirable graphics card, despite the high price.

Verdict

Until DirectX 11 games emerge, we can’t fully assess just how quick the card is. It’s fairly certain that it won’t be the best-value card in the new 5000 range (this honour will probably go to the 5850, which should appear in the next month or so). Still, a 5870 should allow you to replay your DirectX 9 and 10 games with all the graphics settings ramped to the max, or even across three monitors.

If you don’t have a spare £350 to spend on a graphics card, fear not. There’s a good chance that fast existing cards such as the HD 4870 and 4890 will plummet in price, so you may be able to bag a bargain.
