Streamlined timeline controls and superb shake reduction processing, but Video Pro X7's other effects don't match the high price

A major selling point is the inclusion of the ProDAD Mercalli 4, a shake-reduction plug-in that normally costs £238. The bundled version can only run inside Video Pro X but it includes the same controls and processing quality. We’ve used version 3 before and been extremely impressed with both the quality of the results and also the amount of control available. Comprehensive metrics show detected movement in six axes (three spatial, three rotational), which is extremely useful for fine-tuning settings. One downside in this plug-in is that these metrics are overlaid on the preview window, and it’s a pain turning them on and off. We found that the plug-in frequently wanted to re-analyse the footage after adjusting settings – something that isn’t so often necessary with the stand-alone version 3.

The ProDAD Mercalli plug-in provides exceptional shake reduction processing

Version 4 benefits include 65 profiles for action cameras from the likes of GoPro and Sony. Initially we thought this was to apply fish-eye lens correction, but it turns out it’s to improve the quality of stabilisation. Still, we were able to remove fish-eye distortion using Magix’s own Lens Correction effect. ProDAD CMOS Fixr is also included, and did an excellent job of reducing the distracting wobble known as rolling shutter effect. Together, these three processes gave the best results we’ve seen for processing action camera footage, and it’s great to be able to apply them all in a single pass rather than processing and rendering multiple times.

We’re impressed to find that Video Pro X gets the fundamentals right. Timeline editing is responsive and precise and it handles demanding formats and resolutions with ease. It’s not the only editor at this price with these traits, though, and its effects fall short of the standard set by its rivals.
