Firmware flaw blocks Samsung BD-Px600 players

A firmware update designed to introduce improvements to Samsung's BD-Px600 range of Blu-ray players has an unfortunate side-effect: the inability to play films published by Universal and Warner Bros.

Firmware v2.09 introduces the bug - thought to affect all models in the BD-Px600 range, including the well-received BD-P4600 we reviewed back in June last year - which was noticed by members of the audiovisual site AVSForum. When installed, the update loads discs from Universal and Warner Bros. as far as the title screen, at which point the player freezes and refuses to play the disc any further. Discs from other publishers are not affected.

Although Samsung has uploaded an older firmware to its support site - v2.07, which does not contain the bug - some users are reporting problems downgrading to the older version. For these users, Samsung has a updated firmware in the works - but warns that it may take "a couple of weeks" to be rolled out, leaving users with a large chunk of their film catalog that they are unable to watch.

Both new films - such as recently-released The Book of Eli - and older titles - including the 2008 version of The Incredible Hulk - from both publishers are affected by the flaw, which is thought to be the result of a failed update to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection within the player.
